How a demo differs from a live account
With virtual money you won't feel fear after a loss or the urge to win it back. Those only show up when your own money is at stake. Fills on a live account can also differ from the demo. Use the demo to learn the platform. If you then open a live account, Cent and Standard both start at $100.
Questions about the demo account
What is a demo account?+
A trading account with virtual money. It uses the same MT5 platform, instrument prices and order types as a live account. Profits and losses are virtual, and fills can differ from a live account. You can use it to learn the platform, test a strategy and practise sizing positions.
Is the demo account free?+
Yes. You don't need to deposit or give card details. You sign up with an email address, receive your MT5 login and start with $100,000 in virtual money.
How much virtual money do I get?+
$100,000 by default. If you want a different balance, for example to match the account size you plan to trade, ask support for a top-up.
Can I trade every instrument on the demo account?+
Yes, every instrument we offer: forex, metals, energy, indices, shares and crypto. Leverage on a demo can differ from a live account. On live accounts the maximum is 1:500 on ECN, Pro and Standard, and 1:1000 on Cent.
How long does the demo account last?+
There is no fixed end date. A demo account that is not used for a long time may be archived. You can open a new one at any time.
Can I use Expert Advisors on the demo?+
Yes. Every MT5 feature works on the demo, including Expert Advisors, custom indicators and the strategy tester. It is a sensible place to check that an EA behaves as expected before you run it with real money.
What's the difference between a demo and a Cent account?+
A demo uses virtual money. A Cent account is a live account with your balance shown in US cents, so it uses real money in small amounts. On Cent, losses are real, just smaller. One route is demo first, then Cent, then Standard or Pro.
When should I switch from demo to live?+
Three checks help: (1) you have followed the same rules for at least 20 trades and know your results; (2) you can place orders, stop-losses and take-profits in MT5 without hesitating; (3) you have thought about how a losing run would affect you. At that point you could open a Cent or Standard account, both from $100. Only deposit money you can afford to lose.
